See 'Ya Next Year
Posted Sunday, December 30, 2001 by Red Phoenix

It's that time of year, the very end, where webmasters look back to see what progress their site(s) have made in that year. I've looked at RCT Station and what it's done this past year, and I'm not all too happy about the tiny amount of progress we've made. The end of the year was the worst.

2002 looks to be an amazing year for us. The January contest seems to be going well already, which is great to see.

We're going into the new year just off the rumor that the next version of RCT is in production. Whether or not the rumor is true, we'll see. This rumor seems to be holding a little more water than the others which pop up once a month.

A few people are trying to organize a new years chat. You're more than welcome to chat while we still use it.

Happy Coasting,
Red

    Scenario section updated
Posted Wednesday, December 26, 2001 by BLĄde

With the recent release of the new version of the Save Game Modifier, I've converted some of the scenarios into an .SC4 file format, so they're real scenarios. If you happen to download 2 scenarios with the same slot number you must only have 1 installed otherwise scenarios installed with the same slot number will not work. But don't worry with SGM you can save your scenario in up to 27 slots!! I haven't updated all the scenarios into .SC4 files yet I will be soon though.

Note from Red: I just threw up the new version of the SGM, which is 3.11, on to the utilities page.

    January Contest
Posted Wednesday, December 26, 2001 by Red Phoenix

With the December contest all done with, we're moving on to the new year. In the last one, we asked you to dabble with Winter themeing. Hoping that you learned something, we're going to test you out in another winter-themed contest. This is much easier than building an entire park. For details on this, check out the contest page. Good luck to everyone.

Earlier in the week, Tycoon Planet handed out their awards for a few dozen various awards. To see the full list of winners, go here.

I'd like to note that RCT Station had a decent showing in the awards. I've updated the awards that we've won on the About Page. There's a topic or two on our forums regarding this bit of news already, so feel free to comment in them.

There have been a number of problems reported about the site. The biggest one being the one regarding the downloads cutting off before they're finished. To improve the odds of figuring out the problem, I've set up a new form that you can fill out.

If you've had problems with the downloads cutting off, please fill out the form.

    Chris Sawyer Update
Posted Friday, December 21, 2001 by Red Phoenix

Looks like the official Chris Sawyer site was updated on Thursday. This was probably because of the rumors of him creating RCT 3D, which is not to be confused with the version that Dark Helmet is making.

Nothing new to announce yet, but here's a brief update on how Chris Sawyer's latest projects are progressing. Since the completion of the Loopy Landscapes expansion pack for RollerCoaster Tycoon a year ago, Chris has been working concurrently on two projects for the PC. While it is still far from certain if and when they will be completed and published, they are both progressing well. No information has been released yet about either project, and there are no plans to release any information until such time as each project is ready for publication. As soon as there is anything to announce, you will read about it here first. - Chris Sawyer.com

    RCT Inc News
Posted Thursday, December 20, 2001 by Red Phoenix

Looks like Chris (Jacko) was in another bind this week. Urban Shakedown, the person who was with Chris since day one, has decided to depart the site. That was a major loss, of course. Chris has also had to let go of a few staff members, but he's gained a few back, which should keep the site going. Click here if you'd like to visit RCT Inc.

    Snow JS
Posted Friday, December 14, 2001 by Red Phoenix

In past years, I've used a javascript that would make snow fall down the website pages. I've had a lot of webmasters email me in past years because they wanted it. Those of you who want it, can grab nearly the same thing I've used in the past right here. I've already received a few emails on where to get it this year, so there it is.

    RCT Inc Updates
Posted Thursday, December 13, 2001 by Red Phoenix

A long list of updates here, so I'll keep it short.

The Rides section is now online. GamerD86 has joined their staff. The second community park is going right now. The P-Spot status isn't so clear, but an update will hopefully be "soon."

    RCT back on the list
Posted Thursday, December 13, 2001 by Red Phoenix

A few weeks back, I posted news that RCT had fell off the Top 10 selling PC games. I haven't checked the listing until just now, and it's back.

    1) Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone; Electronic Arts - $28
    2) The Sims: Hot Date Expansion Pack; Electronic Arts - $29
    3) The Sims; Electronic Arts - $40
    4) Backyard Basketball; Infogrames Entertainment - $19
    5) Survivor: The Interactive Game; Infogrames Entertainment - $17
    6) MP Roller Coaster Tycoon; Infogrames Entertainment - $20
    7) Return To Castle Wolfenstein; Activision - $56
    8) MS Zoo Tycoon; Microsoft - $25
    9) MP Civilization 3; Infogrames Entertainment - $45
    10) Backyard Football 2002; Infogrames Entertainment - $20

As you can see, publishers are throwing around the advertising bucks around the holiday season, and we get to see some craptacular games.

    Works In Progress
Posted Wednesday, December 12, 2001 by Red Phoenix

When I added the new Ogresnet bar at the top of the page, I added the link to the Works In Progress page as well. I don't think too many people noticed it. That section offers screenshots of projects that members of RCT Station's staff are working on at the moment. A few of the staff have added media there already.

    Hmmm
Posted Wednesday, December 12, 2001 by Red Phoenix

Sorry, but that title best describes this news bit.

I've heard some "interesting" news that Chris Sawyer is in production of a 3D version of RollerCoaster Tycoon, and additional information will become available on Feb 19th 2002.

Whether or not this information is true, I have no idea. The apparent "source" of this info is someone from Danimation who supposedly has eyes and ears in Chris Sawyer's camp.

I'm not usually one to doubt a game's status in production, but this one has me confused. If I were to pin this down to being either true or just someone trying to get attention, I'd say that this is possibly actually true.

A lot of these types of game status news bits are from this sort of "connection" with the developer, and usually not released through the publisher, which is sadly unfortunate.

Anyway, until I get official word on this, you'll have to form your own opinion on the matter.

Mike Robbins has finished up Maps 1 and 2 of his Steve Franks Tribute Park. That's a very interesting project, and I know Steve appreciates it.

It's also been a while since I added any of Bob Hooley's parks. I just added two new ones. They're Playland at the Lake and Worlds of Adventure Theme Park 2.

    Microsoft to buy Infogrames?
Posted Tuesday, December 11, 2001 by Red Phoenix

There is a big industry rumor that Microsoft is looking at taking over Take-Two Interactive and Infogrames.

Infogrames supremo Bruno Bonnell, long rumoured as eyeing a career in French politics, stated in August this year that he and his corporation "share Microsoft's vision for the future of gaming." The publisher holds nine confirmed Xbox games for the European market at the moment, including Sega's portfolio of Gun Valkyrie, Jet Set Radio Future, The House of the Dead 3, Crazy Taxi Next, Sega GT 2002 and the next generation update of revered old-skool franchise, Panzer Dragoon.

When asked specifically about the rumoured Infogrames deal, a spokesperson for Microsoft replied with, "No comment." Infogrames remained unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.

I have no idea what Chris Sawyer thinks of Microsoft, but if this were to happen, good things could come from it. Imagine good 'ol Uncle Bill marketing RollerCoaster Tycoon 2.

As you may have read on the forums page, I was reverting back to IB2 due to some problems with Ikonboard. The problems weren't worth the hassle. IB 2.1.9 may not be the greatest, but it's more stable than the current Release Candidate of IB3 from what I've experienced.

Please update your bookmarks yet once again. The forums are at http://mboards.ogresnet.com/cgi/forums/rct/ikonboard.cgi. If you registered in IB3, you'll have to re-register.

Posted Sunday, December 2, 2001 by Red Phoenix

Since my job here at Ogresnet is community manager, I had to deal with the forums of all of the sites here. Mithras was able to get EEO's boards converted once I got the boards back from the abyss. To make a long story short, I have gotten all of the boards back online and converted to IB3.

IB3 is insanely more complex than IB2. You might like the Address Book and Birthday Calendar.

There are two primary problems with the boards right now:

  • If you used a line break in your signatures, it's all jumbled together and it has a [br] in there. This is an easy fix; just edit that stuff out in your personal control panel.

  • Your email addresses were all automatically switched to "hidden" during the conversion. This is also an easy fix; just toggle that off in your personal control panel.

The forums can be found here. Be sure to bookmark the page!

With the forums being down the majority of last month, the November contest was a bust. The December contest, which I just added, is MUCH easier, and you can do just about anything. There won't really need to be any questions asked since the rules are nearly non-existant. If you do, however, have a question, email Mike Robbins, until we get the boards up.
