How to Go Retro
Posted Tuesday, December 31, 2002 by Ogre

Going retro isn't always easy. And in a series of articles, Ogre's Network editor Ogre will try and help those who dare to venture into classic gaming with solutions to possible problems they may encounter. The first article covers how to get those classic Dos titles to work.

Looking Forward
Posted Sunday, December 29, 2002 by Red Phoenix

With just a short time left in 2002, I figured I'd look ahead to what's coming up. 2002 was pretty much a mixed bag for content. I didn't post nearly as much as I thought I would have considering the release of a new game.

2003 will be a year to look forward to. I'm really hoping things go as I plan, because things will be posted just about every day. There will also be things that many people have practically begged for, and I know I'm looking forward to the new year for the new stuff alone. The hiring of the new staff this month has already started to pay off, mainly behind the scenes. In 2003, their work will show even more.

I would also like to take the time to congratulate former RCT Station staff member Kai Reichman on the birth of his new child, Gavin. I know Kai and his wife have long awaited the arrival of Gavin.
Ogre's Network Design Changes and New Content
Posted Sunday, December 29, 2002 by Ogre

Over the past few weeks the site seems to have been faultering a little bit. This has been mostly because of lack of time due to the holidays. Well with Christmas over, the Ogre and others can once again contribute some time to the site. With this comes a few slight changes. First the site's design has been modified. You will now notice that the right side has been completely changed. Not only is there a poll on it but also a few new features. From now on there will be the top 10 selling PC titles, the poll, and the monthly featured Ogre's Network site. Plus new articles have been added.

December Contest Results
Posted Sunday, December 29, 2002 by Red Phoenix

The December 2002 Contest Results are posted. Congratulations to the winner. Unfortunately, we didn't get enough entries to do the full contest results as planned, so only RCT 2 winners were posted.

January 2003 will not have any contests.
New Scenery
Posted Tuesday, December 24, 2002 by Red Phoenix

Here's a very small scenery update. You can find a Golf Playset from Buhdewsy, as well as a Lego block from Speile-design.

There will be several more updates soon.
Posted Tuesday, December 24, 2002 by Red Phoenix

The December contest is almost over, folks. Get your entries in before it's too late!

New Staff
Posted Sunday, December 22, 2002 by Red Phoenix

With the recent loss of over a half-dozen staff members this month, we have brought in some new people, which will be a significant addition. Below is a list of the new staff:

  • BigFoot
  • skippy
  • Junya Boy
  • Coasterct Nick
  • skyman8081
  • gymkid dude
  • Agent Westy
  • nivlac

We're really hoping that with this large staff upgrade, we will get the projects forums organized better, new and better contests, and more updates on the main site.

The final round of voting has started on RCT Survivor.
Big Steve Franks Update
Posted Friday, December 20, 2002 by Red Phoenix

A short while ago, Steve updated his Over The Top! track pack, but forgot to include the RCT 2 track file. It's now included.

Steve has asked that I post an "official" workbench for his track packs. It can be downloaded towards the top of all his pages.

Now that RCT 2 is been out for a while now, Steve has had time to look at it and see what sort of impact it will have on his track packs, and he has written a document regarding all of this, and like the workbench, it can be downloaded towards the top of all his pages.

And if that weren't enough of an update, we have a brand new track pack to release - Jack Rabbit @ Idora Park.

RCT 2 Review
Posted Wednesday, December 18, 2002 by Red Phoenix

RCT 2 reviews are apparently still coming out. Games First has just put up their review (well, on Monday actually).
New Scenery
Posted Monday, December 16, 2002 by Red Phoenix

I have added 15 New Pieces of Scenery to the site, all of which comes from spin.

Continue to send in your scenery, and I'll get to it. I'm amazed at how much scenery has been created, whether it's using original graphics or graphics from other things.

Including a screenshot improves your chances of getting the scenery posted greatly.
Posted Sunday, December 15, 2002 by Red Phoenix

I have worked on the trainers page and added a few RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 trainers. I have made separate pages for RCT and RCT 2 trainers, so you won't get confused (hopefully).

Trainer Developers, when you release a new version of your trainer, go ahead and send me a copy of it, and I'll try to make note of it as soon as possible.
December Contest
Posted Sunday, December 15, 2002 by Red Phoenix

In case you didn't know, there is a December contest to enter in. Be sure to get involved and ask questions about the contest in the contest forum.

Posted Sunday, December 15, 2002 by Red Phoenix

I have added 13 Pieces of Scenery, all from Buhdewsy. Scenery, in case you didn't know, can be downloaded and used in RCT 2 scenarios.
Staff Leaving
Posted Sunday, December 15, 2002 by Red Phoenix

This week has certainly been an interesting one. We have lost several staff members, for various reasons. I just want to take the time to thank Dave (rcthelp), Kai Reichman, Damon Seymour (homieg1386), Dustin Giffin, and Jens for all of what they have done during their time here as staff members, and I wish them the best in whatever they move on to.

Note: Since Jens is no longer a staff member, please send your scenery submissions to redphoenix@ogresnet.com.
New Scenarios
Posted Saturday, December 14, 2002 by Red Phoenix

After laying idle, the Scenarios section has finally been updated by Rob Tonto. There a some new scenarios, and a couple new hosted designers.

Possible RCT 2 Expansion Pack
Posted Saturday, December 14, 2002 by Red Phoenix

Mike Robbins has provided a link to Eurogamer, which shows that an expansion pack is slated for June 2003 (just in time for my birthday).

RCT2.com has posted an additional link to EBGames which says it will ship on 5/6/2003.

No official word on an expansion pack, might I add, has been released.

You can discuss this right here.
Magnolia Gardens
Posted Friday, December 13, 2002 by Red Phoenix

Magnolia Gardens is Mike Robbins' newest park, and can be downloaded here. Keep in mind it's for RollerCoaster Tycoon 2.
Scenery Editor Update
Posted Friday, December 13, 2002 by Red Phoenix

Doctor J has issued an update to his scenery editor. It's version 1.01, and here's what Doctor J has to say about it:

It corrects the bugs with animation editing. There is now a setting for delay between individual frames of animation. There are a couple of options added in - choose between a default crosshair cursor or the "tool specific" cursors as in the first release. There is a setting for the default transparent pixel handling (which few of you will notice any difference.) There is provision now for retaining remap color 1 dat when copy/paste of images within the editor is conducted. I still have not tested the clock object so its best to avoid making clocks for now.
Chris Sawyer Tips
Posted Friday, December 13, 2002 by Red Phoenix

Working exclusively with PC Gamer, Chris Sawyer helped come up with two pages of tips (and screenshots). All of these are in the January 2003 edition of PC Gamer magazine.
More Parks
Posted Thursday, December 12, 2002 by Red Phoenix

Spiderman's parks are finally on the site, a few months later than planned.
Finally Up
Posted Thursday, December 12, 2002 by Red Phoenix

A while ago, a link to Great Brain's parks was posted, but there weren't any parks there to download. This has been fixed, go ahead and download them now.
Quick Heads Up
Posted Thursday, December 12, 2002 by Red Phoenix

It's been reported a few times that Steve Franks' Proper Queue Design article has some problems. The pictures don't pop-up quite right. I'm going to work on this soon, so don't report it as a problem anymore.
Other Site News

RCT 2 scenery page is here!
Posted Thursday, December 12, 2002 by Jens

Hi, I'm Jens. I will be the one that updates the scenery objects page. I create scenery objects myself and sometime the updates will include some objects created by myself. The first 2 objects (made by me) are ready for you to download and you can download them here.

If you think your objects are good for RCT 2 and you want them here for download? Submit them by sending me a mail. Click here to send me a mail and be sure to include a zip file with the object in it and a screenshot in good quality. If you don't do these things your e-mail will be ignored!

I hope you have fun with this rather big update!
RCT 2 Patch
Posted Tuesday, December 10, 2002 by Red Phoenix

A patch for RCT 2 has surfaced. This patch specifically addresses issues users may be having with the SecuRom copy protection included with the game. If the game fails to run after being installed, particularly immediately after the cursor on-screen briefly turns into an animated CDROM, this patch may address that issue.

Note that this patch addresses NO other gameplay issues. If you are able to launch the game now, you do not need this update.

Go here for the patch.

Be sure to remember that if the game runs fine, don't bother with the patch.
RCT Track Decoder Update
Posted Tuesday, December 10, 2002 by Red Phoenix

Greg Wolking has updated his RCT Track Decoder utility to work with all versions of RCT, including RCT 2. You can find out more information on it, as well as a download link right here.
Saved Games Moved
Posted Tuesday, December 10, 2002 by Red Phoenix

I've moved the saved game files over to File Front, so you can now download those saved games, and even leave a comment. It's all very easy to use.
Ogre's Network Affiliates with File Front
Posted Monday, December 9, 2002 by Red Phoenix

Ogre's Network proudly announces an affiliation with File Front to bring you downloads. File Front is known in the gaming community for having the latest and greatest demos, patches, and mod files for some of the greatest and most popular PC games.

Through our affiliation with File Front, you can not only download files, but rate them, give comments, and even get files burned on a CD and shipped to you for a very low cost.

You will be downloading files from File Front very soon. While you are downloading a file for Zoo Tycoon, RollerCoaster Tycoon, etc, you can go look for the latest Quake mod or newest game demos.
The Future
Posted Monday, December 9, 2002 by Red Phoenix

I've never been the type of person to formulate a publically-available list of things I plan on doing, so this is certainly something new in and of itself here.

During the past three or four months, RCT Station has really withered away when it comes to updates and its status in the community. While we have been withering away, sites like RCT2.com, Tycoon Planet, New Element, and RCT HQ, just to name a few, have only gotten bigger and better. I guess part of our so-called withering away is due to personal life, but it's also because the official sites have returned.

As the month of December goes along, and we approach the new year, I'm sure things around here will pick up to where we used to be. Part of the future is with the staff, which has already been changed somewhat, but will continue changing until we get a better staff to fit the needs of the visitors.

Now that RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 has been out for a little while, more and more utilities/trainers have been, and will continue to become developed and released for public use. The most recent of which is version 1 of Doctor J's scenery editor, which allows for the creation of importable scenery objects in RCT 2. This means even more submissions for the site, and quite frankly, we're simply not up to meeting that challenge right now. This is just another one of the things that need addressing in the upcoming weeks and months.
Ogre's Network Reviews NOLF2 Multi-player
Posted Monday, December 9, 2002 by Red Phoenix

When Ogre's Network editor Ogre originally took at look at No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy In H.A.R.M.'s Way, he did not really look at the multi-player mode. Just recently he and fellow Ogre's Network editor Jim (Red Phoenix) Chamberlin revisited the title to review the multi-player mode and the new death match patch and map pack released by Sierra and Fox Interactive. Here is a snippet:

"In my mind there is no doubt that No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy In H.A.R.M.'s Way has an exceptional single-player mode. After all it was meant to shine as a single-player first person shooter. Its storyline and characters are something right out of the sexy sophisticated fantasy spy era of the 1960's that James Bond epitomizes. Agent Cate Archer, the game's main character, must stop the evil H.A.R.M. organization from destroying the world. Sounds interesting eh? Indeed it is, I thoroughly enjoyed playing the single-player mode, but what do I think of the game's multi-player mode?"
