Case Modding Fun Part II: Shape and Form
Posted Thursday, January 30, 2003 by Ogre

The Ogre just finished up his second article on case modding. Here is a snippet:

"Shape and form is defined as the basic structure of the computer case itself and the materials it is constructed from. Many people simply think a case is just a steel or plastic box that holds the necessary components, which make up the computer. It is true that this is the basic function, but it is also true that it can be so much more."

Ogre's Case Modding Fun
Posted Thursday, January 23, 2003 by Ogre

Over the next few weeks, the Ogre is going to be putting writing a series of articles on how to put together a reasonable mod. These articles shall chronicle his endeavor into this exciting new frontier. By the time he is through, his dual Athlon MP system will have a home worthy of its power! Here is a snippet from the introduction:

"The latest buzz throughout the custom computer arena for the last few years has been case modding. In fact, more savvy people are now probably doing this more than over clocking. But what exactly is case modding?"

Object Editor Update Soon
Posted Monday, January 20, 2003 by Red Phoenix

Doctor J posted some good news on his RCT TID site:

The new version of the editor will handle walls, banners and path additions. The magnified view can be adjusted from 3X to 10X. The background can be selected as either black, white or "grass" similar to the grass tiles in RCT. The main code is completed - but testing still needs to be done. I expect to release it soon ... and I apologize for the numerous delays. :(

Ogre's Network Reviews The Thing
Posted Monday, January 20, 2003 by Ogre

The Ogre recently took a look at the sci-fi thriller survival horror game The Thing. Here is a snippet of what he had to say:

"The Thing is probably remembered as one of the best sci-fi thrillers and is famous for the way it ended, a chilling cliffhanger. Well where the movie left off, the recently released Computer Artworks title by the same name begins. It is suppose to be the official sequel to the movie."

Gaming For The Sexes
Posted Thursday, January 16, 2003 by Ogre

Ogre's Network editor Ogre has just recently written a new editorial on the differences between the sexes when it comes to gaming. Here is a snippet:

"The answer is that regardless of sex, everyone’s taste varies. Not all people like violent games and not all people like nonviolent games and some like a little bit of both. So therefore I don’t believe there is that much of a difference. I think the reason we don’t see too many titles out there designed specifically for males or females is that there just isn’t that much of a need for it. There are titles out there to pretty much suit everyone’s different and unique tastes."

Staff Position Open
Posted Wednesday, January 15, 2003 by Red Phoenix

With the constant number of incoming submissions, we need to take on another staff member.

I'm looking for someone who is very, very good with HTML. You will need an HTML editor, like FrontPage or Dreamweaver, as well as RCT, RCT - Loopy Landscapes, and RCT 2.

Your job will be editing the html files from the site and getting them ready and updated for uploading to the site. We might even have two positions depending on who posts an application.

You will have to work your ass off when you become an html editor here - don't expect this to be a glorious job.

Think you can help out? Post an application!

Official Pink Water Add-on
Posted Wednesday, January 15, 2003 by Red Phoenix

There is a new patch/add-on out (bizarre timing).

Add some spice to your park with Chris Sawyer's 'pink water' add-on object for RollerCoaster Tycoon® 2. Simply downloaded directly into the game's ObjData folder (usually C:\Program Files\Infogrames Interactive\RollerCoaster Tycoon 2\ObjData), and then should appear in the 'water' options in the scenario editor when you create a new scenario.

Ogre's Network Reviews Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit II
Posted Monday, January 13, 2003 by Ogre

Ogre's Network editor Ogre recently took a look at the latest title in the Need For Speed series, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit II. Below is an excerpt.

"Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit II is the latest in the Need For Speed racing series from Electronic Arts. The formula hasn’t changed too much since the original title. There is just something about speed, exotic sports cars, and beautiful scenic views that seem to get into the bloodstream of most people. Perhaps it is because in this world we are always given constraints by society or we are unable to get in touch with our wild side because of fear, but in any case I think it is more that everyone has a little bit of an armchair adrenaline fanatic in them. Here the game definitely delivers in quantity. Unfortunately, however, one important element does seem to be lacking from this installment-realism."

How to Go Retro Part II
Posted Thursday, January 9, 2003 by Ogre

Ogre's Network editor Ogre has just posted part two of his 'How to Go Retro' series. In this one he covers how to get older Windows 95 based games working in Windows XP. Here is a snippet:

"In part one I talked about a few issues that may arise when trying to run old DOS games in Windows XP, but it isn't always smooth sailing when trying to load old Windows 95 based games either. In fact I have probably ran into more issues getting older 9x Windows games to run on Windows XP. Windows 95, 98, and Millennium, also known as the 9x series, are 32bit protected memory operating systems, but underneath the hood they still use a lot of old DOS code. This can cause some issues in Windows XP when the game goes to launch 16bit library files that are not compatible with the Windows NT kernel."

New Utility
Posted Monday, January 6, 2003 by Red Phoenix

Imthesponge has released a new utility called DImport. Here's a brief description from the official site for the utility:

This tool allows you to make scenery usable in a scenario. (does not support opening sv6 files yet, you must convert to a scenario)
It doesn't actually embed the object in the file, so you must have the DAT file in the ObjData folder or the game will refuse to load the scenario.

Also, before you use it go to options and un-check "Export plug-in objects with saved games".

Thanks to RCT2.com for the news

Sim City 2000 Special Edition Retro Peek
Posted Sunday, January 5, 2003 by Ogre

The Ogre has just posted his latest retro peek. This one is on the classic simulation titled Sim City 2000 Special Edition. Here is a snippet:

"Back in 1989, Will Wright, founder of the then small game developing firm Maxis, was inspired to create a city simulation title. The project was even more ambitious than similar titles such as Sid Meier's Civilization. And it was so successful that it has continued to spawn simulation titles with their own unique look and feel, such as The Sims. Sim City, as it was called, combined many different elements. Each gave players the ability to feel as if they were truly the mayor of a city. Even though the game was very popular, it wasn't until its sequel, Sim City 2000, came out that the concept really took off. Why is this?"

Ogre's Network Reviews Age of Mythology
Posted Saturday, January 4, 2003 by Ogre

Ogre's Network editor Ogre has just finished his review of the latest real-time strategy offering from Ensemble Studios, Age of Mythology. He gives it a 5 out of 5. Here is a snippet:

"All in all, Age of Mythology offers plenty of game play options such as single-player and multi-player modes, a rich beautiful world brought together by detailed graphics and stunning sound, and is right for any age. There is no doubt in my mind that Age of Mythology is a real-time strategy game fit for even the gods!"
