On another note, a December contest is already planned and will be posted on December 1st, even if the November results aren't posted. This will provide you with some additional time.

This update comes thanks to Jacko, from RCT Inc, who posted news about the official site removing the old patches. I never even noticed this, and I don't recall anyone sending me an email about the problem. I have added all of the official patches for all of the languages. Hopefully, the Infogrames Webmasters will add them to the official site.

Ogre's Network Previews The Gladiators
Posted Thursday, November 28, 2002 by Ogre

Have you ever wondered what it would be like as a galactic gladiator? Well wonder no more! France based Arxel Tribe is soon to be releasing The Gladiators: Galactic Circus Games, which puts you in an arena as a gladiator where you have to fight galactic opponents in a battle to the death. It might not be a new concept, but it certainly is for a real-time strategy title.

Rise of Nations Oracle Interviews Doug Kaufman
Posted Saturday, November 23, 2002 by Ogre

Ogre is happy to post an interview that he did with Doug Kaufman. Doug is the senior game designer over at Big Huge Games! Here is a snippet:

"Ogre: There have been a few real-time strategy titles, such as Empire Earth, which have tried to cover the entire expanse of Human history with such complexity that players had a hard time understanding the game play mechanics. Rise of Nations seems to have a similar scope and size. Do you think average people will be able to pick up Rise of Nations and be able to figure it out without too much difficulty?

Doug Kaufman: “World history in under an hour” has been our motto from the beginning of the project, and these exact concerns were raised before we even began work. The fundamental design concept was based on answering such questions as “Will the player have enough mental bandwidth to handle this task?” and “How can we have things like diplomacy that appear to require popups without interrupting the game?” and “In what ways can we simplify repetitive or mechanical tasks in order to leave brain room for a more global, time-spanning strategy?” We’ve found so far in usability testing that, while the game is of course complex, it is not needlessly so, and if you choose to play at a very simple level, you can. The complexities come not in being able to play the game, but in being able to play the game well."

Ogre's Network Retro Peek: Prince of Persia
Posted Saturday, November 23, 2002 by Ogre

As some may know, Ogre's Network editor Ogre is quite keen on many older PC titles besides the latest and greatest ones. He also promised that he would do an entire series of his retro peeks on the classic titles that were mentioned in a recent Ogre's Network poll. Well here is the first one of those retro peek articles and it is on Prince of Persia. Below is a snippet, enjoy!

"There are many classic PC game titles that hold a special place in my gaming heart, but probably none as much as Prince of Persia. I can remember the first time I played Prince of Persia at a friends house on his Tandy computer. At the time I thought it was one of the best games I had ever laid eyes on. Not only that, but I also knew immediately I was possibly looking at something revolutionary. Most game designers in those days did not place emphasis on any real-life physics. However it was obvious that the designer of Prince of Persia, Jordan Mechner, did."

New Review
Posted Thursday, November 14, 2002 by Red Phoenix

UGO has posted a review of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. Here's a snippet:

When all is said and done, Rollercoaster Tycoon 2 is a nicely evolved version of Rollercoaster Tycoon. There is enough stuff to justify a sequel, and the game strikes a nice balance between remaining true to the original while giving enough tweaks and new stuff to feel different. While it isn't radically different, such as having the ability to ride your own coasters from a first person perspective (like the other coaster games), it is still the most realistic of the group. And, hey! Who doesn't enjoy building their own rockin' rollercoasters? Check out my Brainsmasher 3000, complete with 10 upside down inversions, barrel-rolls, and half-loops - barf bag not included.

New Review
Posted Tuesday, November 12, 2002 by Red Phoenix

The Adrenaline Vault has posted a new review of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. Here's a snippet:

A new editor permits you to make your own scenarios from scratch. You may determine your park's size, landscape, entry point and footpaths, the foliage present, the array of shops included and the goals necessary for players to accomplish. However, a key limitation of the editor is that while working within it, you can't construct roller coasters or concession booths; instead, you have to play the scenario, build the desired coasters and stands, save your game, then convert your saved game into a scenario using the editor's tools. The result is that what should be seamless and intuitive is awkward and unwieldy.

New Review
Posted Friday, November 8, 2002 by Red Phoenix

TechTV's Extended Play has written a review of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. Here's a snippet:

Visually, "RollerCoaster Tycoon 2" makes absolutely no technical leap forward. It is clearly running on the same engine as the first version. In fact, if you were to compare the two games, it would be very hard to tell the difference. Calling a game a sequel sets up certain set of expectations. For all the little changes added to the game, "RollerCoaster Tycoon 2" simply feels more like and expansion pack. Make no mistake, "RollerCoaster Tycoon 2" has all the charm and entertainment value of the first game, but that's because it's essentially the same as the first game.

Thanks to kco19 on the forums for pointing this out.

New Review
Posted Friday, November 8, 2002 by Red Phoenix

Game Nexus has written a review of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2.

Pull out the vomit bags. I’ll tell you what you don’t get for 30 bucks. Innovation. This game is a cynical slap in the face to fans of the "series". I could have written the review above for the RCT 1 and it would not have to change at all. Here we are four years after the original and RCT2 has no additions in the technology arena worth noting. The manual makes some cockamamie claim that the game is rebuilt from the ground up. Yeah? Show me where the consumer sees the benefits of this rebuild? I don’t see it anywhere. The graphics are awful. Awful! Sure they have the charm of the original but that’s because they look like the original. Would it have been too much to ask that the developers put some effort into updating the charm? I understand that games aren’t all about the glitz. And didn’t I just say it’s a fun and addictive game? Yup. But this thing is 30 clams folks. Thirty bucks that your standard consumer works hard for. Thirty bucks he’ll feel cheated out of when he realizes the four years he’s waited have been for an expansion pack under the guise of a sequel.

From The Lair: Who Said It Was All Fun and Games?
Posted Thursday, November 7, 2002 by Red Phoenix

Ogre gives his spin on how much hard work it truly is making electronic computer games in his latest From The Lair. Here is a little of he said:

"On my recent trip to the Age of Mythology launch party in Dallas, Texas; I got to meet the guys at Ensemble Studios who worked many sleepless hours trying to get the game finished and ready for store shelves. In fact, many of them during this time only got four hours of sleep a night. I would say indeed that this is working very hard."

Ogre's Network Reviews No One Lives Forever 2
Posted Thursday, November 7, 2002 by Red Phoenix

Ogre's Network editor Ogre takes a look at No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy In H.A.R.M.'s Way from Fox Interactive and Monolith. Here is some of what he had to say:

"There haven’t been too many titles that have come across my desk that have made me stay up into the wee hours playing until my eyes burned and became bloodshot. However, No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy In H.A.R.M.’s Way affected me in just such a manner. There is just something about this title that says, “Play me!”"

New Custom Scenery in RCT 2?
Posted Friday, November 1, 2002 by Red Phoenix

It appears that there is some work going into the making of custom-made scenery for RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. You can find a topic about this right here. It certainly looks interesting.

RollerCoaster Tycoon still lacks that customability that has kept the Zoo Tycoon community so busy with new things. Every day there's a new animal, piece of scenery, or building being released by a fan of the game. It would certainly be nice if we could make custom stalls or something with an editor.
